Found object Artist
"I make art from things."
For years, my passion has been collecting things to make art. I have found thousands of interesting items from garage sales, estate sales, and flea markets. I hope YOU find something here to delight you.
I grew up in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, a suburb just north of Minneapolis. At about age 5, I asked my mom if I could paint a stick I had found. When she asked what I’d do with it after I painted it, I replied, “I’d just look at it.” Sixty years later, I still get the same thrill making art out of objects that I find. Like a typical kid of the 1950s, I spent many Saturday mornings watching Superman, Flash Gordon and The Jetsons, among others. I’m quite sure those shows fuel my imagination, as spaceships, robots and aliens many times emerge from my studio. I enjoy the process of finding, dismantling and cobbling items together to forge a creation that leaves the original function behind and springs from inspiration. A vintage toaster becomes the fuselage of a space ship, and I’m off. I look for items with compelling shapes, colors and textures, the rustier and older the better. My work might tell an intended story, or it may just be a random merging of elements with an interesting composition as the goal. I welcome the viewer to engage and interpret the piece on their own.
